Experience the Victoria Falls
There are two sides to Victoria Falls - the Zambian and Zimbabwean sides and both are well worth a visit, along with the Falls itself. An eternal debate seems to run about whether travellers should stay on the Zimbabwean or Zambian side, but really it depends on the time of year that you visit and which lodge or hotel takes your fancy.
The Victoria Falls is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. At its peak flow around June, a mile-wide chasm 100m straight down is filled with the roar of water falling at a rate of 3,000 tonnes per second.
David Livingstone, the Scottish missionary and explorer, was the first European to view the Victoria Falls - which he did from what is now known as 'Livingstone Island' in Zambia, the only land accessible in the middle of the falls. David Livingstone gave the falls its name in honour of his Queen, but the indigenous name of 'Mosi-oa-Tunya' - literally meaning the 'Smoke that Thunders' - is also recognised on The World Heritage List.
