Conservation Leadership: A Vision Inspired by Nelson Mandela
In 1926, Charles Boyd Varty and Frank Unger purchased a bankrupt cattle farm in South Africa’s wild Lowveld with nothing but adventure in their hearts. They couldn’t have imagined that their pioneering spirit would lay the foundation for photographic safari tourism in Africa.
Fifty years later, their grandsons Dave and John Varty faced a choice: sell the land for financial security or transform it into something unprecedented. Armed with R62, a Zulu dictionary (from which they pulled the word “Londolozi” – protector of all living things), and unwavering determination, they chose the impossible. Their mission was revolutionary for 1972: create a financially viable business to conserve wildlife and support people, proving that humanity and nature could interact on a sustainable basis.
Under the guidance of maverick ecologist Ken Tinley, Londolozi embarked on South Africa’s first restoration project of its kind. Carefully managed land practices raised the water table. As the ecosystem healed, prey species returned, followed by predators. The Leopards of Londolozi, once rarely seen, would become world-famous.
In 1991, immediately following his release from prison, Nelson Mandela stayed at Londolozi as a guest of the Varty family during a recuperation period before resuming his role as leader of the African National Congress. During those weeks, Mandela shared his vision for a South Africa where conservation and community development would work in partnership. He asked the Varty family to share their conservation blueprint throughout the continent, demonstrating that safari tourism could uplift communities while protecting wildlife.

From that day forward, Londolozi has endeavoured to live by Madiba’s values. In 2009, we built Mandela’s Way (Freedom’s Way) – a piece of land art by Simon Max Bannister forming the central pathway through Londolozi Village. Indigenous trees and shrubs planted by the Londolozi family line this path, with Madiba’s words offering reminders of his vision for equality, dignity, and partnership with nature.
What began as a for-profit conservation model evolved into a social enterprise with the founding of Conservation Corporation Africa (now &Beyond), expanding the Londolozi blueprint across the continent. Today, the Varty family has returned home to dive even deeper into what it means to be an economically, socially, and environmentally responsible organization.
In 2024, Dave Varty received the Eco-Logic Lifetime Achievement Award for five decades of conservation leadership – recognition that when you give nature a real seat at the decision-making table, extraordinary things happen. World-Renowned Leopard Viewing in the Sabi Sands
Londolozi’s reputation for exceptional leopard encounters is unmatched globally. Since 1979, when the Mother Leopard first revealed herself to Dave, Shan, and John Varty, we have documented an unbroken lineage of leopards now spanning seven generations.
Research conducted by Panthera, the global wild cat conservation organization, confirms that the central Sabi Sands – of which Londolozi forms a major part – has a leopard density of approximately 12 animals per 100 square kilometers, ranking among the highest for the species anywhere in their range and the highest in any protected area.
This extraordinary density, combined with five decades of respectful habituation by our rangers and trackers, means guests regularly witness intimate leopard behaviors rarely seen elsewhere: mothers nursing cubs in broad daylight, mating pairs, successful hunts, and peaceful interactions between multiple individuals.
